LTK Omega Plus
There are
three major Omega-3 fatty acids in the family, namely alpha-linolenic
Acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
The human body cannot produce its own ALA, therefore it is called `essential
fatty acid'. We need to obtain ALA through the consumption of food that
contain it such as flaxseed, soybean, walnut, and green leafy vegetables.
However, we either do not consume enough of these foods or its contents
of ALA are low. LTK Omega Plus eggs provide an excellent alternative
source of ALA.
From the ALA consumed, our body can convert it to EPA and DHA (which are
found mostly in cold water fish oils); therefore ALA can be substituted
for fish oils.(1)
In fact, LTK Omega Plus* egg contains all the three major Omega-3
fatty acids mentioned above. It is produced by our wholly owned subsidiary,
LTK (Melaka) Sdn Bhd under license from MARDITECH Corporation Sdn Bhd,
a commercial arm of MARDI (Malaysian
Agriculture Research and Development Institute) using all natural vegetarian
ingredients.
There are many reports state that all the three major Omega-3 fatty acids
(ALA, EPA and DHA) play vital role in keeping us healthy, such as the
benefits of reducing the risks of heart disease, hypertension, stroke,
rheumatoid arthritis, some cancers and the development in the brain and
eye tissues.
Though many of us already know that Eskimos have very little heart problem
due to their high consumption of cold water fish (therefore more DHA and
EPA); there are also studies showing that the population of Crete (an
island in the Mediterranean) and Kohama Island of Japan has high concentration
of ALA in their blood plasma, very low coronary disease and highest life
expectancy in the world! (2&3)
Ministry of Health Canada recommends a total Omega-3 fatty acid intake
of 1,200-1,600 mg per day and does not distinguish between individual
ALA, EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids. (4) The United Kingdom does distinguish
between individual Omega-3 fatty acids and recommends that 1% of energy
be from ALA and 0.5% be from EPA and DHA combined. (5) A joint Food and
Agriculture Organisation/World Health Organisation committee recommends
a daily level of 40mg DHA per kilogram bodyweight for infants.
In short, the general recommended daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids
are about 800-1,100mg of ALA and 300-400mg of EPA and DHA for adult and
children.
* An average size LTK Omega Plus egg contains about 150-250mg ALA, 60-120mg
DHA and 3-5 mg EPA.
